Brooke Schuh (b. Green Bay, WI) is an abstract visual artist whose work highlights the unseen exchange between tangible and energetic environments. She earned a Certificate in Painting and Drawing from the Academy of Fine Arts in Denmark, and holds a BFA from the University of Colorado Boulder. She pursued Post-Baccalaureate studies in ceramics at the University of Arkansas.
Early in her artistic development, Schuh worked alongside Jeanne and David Aurelius at Clay Bay Pottery in Ellison Bay, WI, an experience that led her to pursue ceramics. Schuh has since completed a long-term residency at the Mendocino Art Center and has exhibited nationally, most notably at the ARC Gallery in Chicago, IL; Face Guts in Los Angeles, CA; and the John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis, CA.
It is the unseen exchange between our tangible and energetic environment that informs my abstract language. Automatic drawing first serves as a loose framework for form and spatial composition, allowing an instinctual and meditative process to guide the development of each piece. Drawing from architecture, breezeblocks, botanicals, and cycles of death and rebirth, I investigate how these forms and rhythms exist within and shape our organic environment. There is a spiritual essence in how light or energy can move through a structure that is explored in my work. Working in ceramics, I coil-build a delicate space that draws on the interconnectedness between our inner and outer worlds.
